COMMISSIONS / CUSTOM PAINTINGS

COMMISSIONS

I work directly with clients as well as interior designers to paint commissions. The opportunity to create an heirloom quality piece that rings true for a client is a fun and inspiring way to work. For me, art has always truly made a house a home because quality artwork can impact wellbeing: it can serve as an invitation for mindfulness and simple gazing; or it can energize a space. Perhaps the painting memorializes or celebrates a specific location or memory significant to the client.

I can work off a mood board or renderings of a space that is still in the development stage - or I can respond to an existing space, environment, furniture, and decor.

For custom pieces, here’s what we need to start the process:

  • Size (we can work together on this if you aren't sure). For commissions I work small from around 10” x 10” up to 6 feet x 6 feet.

  • A general decision about what type of work you are looking for. Options may include something like “ a large painting with sky and calm clouds in lavender and grays” or “here’s a few photos of the view of the coast outside our old window, can you abstract it but still make it feel specific to the that view?”

  • If you have reference images of a specific location I can work with these. Depending on the project, I may do a site visit and create a sketch or study en plein air.

  • A few images of my previous work that you like.

  • Colors that are important to include in the piece.

  • Fabric swatches, paint chips and photos of the space the work will be installed are all helpful.

Terms for commissions:

  • We discuss the project and I draft a proposal.

  • A 50% deposit is required upfront.

  • A timeline is delivered once we decide on the project. Keep in mind oil paint and varnish take time to dry. Acrylic and flashe, which I also use, dries faster.

  • I’ll send you an image once I feel the painting is close to done and you can offer feedback or recommendations. If you are not satisfied with the artwork at this time, I will not invoice for the balance.

  • Shipping costs are additional. Delivery is available if local to Portland, Maine.

  • Framing makes a significant difference and elevates the work. Frames can vary in cost quite a bit. We should consider framing at the time of the commission as there’s a flat rate we can add on and I provide the frame or we can make plans with a local framer of your choice.

  • All commission sales are binding and final.
